Faculty and Staff Presentations

ASSERT Faculty and staff have given several presentations on computer security issues at conferences and workshops, and are always looking for additional venues at which they can educate users at all level on issues of computer security. If you have a group which would be interested in hearing such a presentation, please let us know.

Recent Presentations

• Dr. Kara Nance and Christopher Hecker presented a paper entitled "Computer Forensics at the 2006 Alaska Summer Research Academy" at the 11th Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education (CISSE) in June 2007.

• Dr. Kara Nance and Dr. Brian Hay presented a paper entitled "Certifying the Computer Security Professional Using the Project Management Institute's PMP Model" at the 11th IFIP SEC 2007 International Information Security Conference in May 2007.

• Christopher Hecker presented a paper entitled "Promoting Digital Forensics Awareness through the University of Alaska Fairbanks ASSERT Center" at the 40th Hawaii International International Conference on Systems Science (HICSS) in January 2007.

• Christopher Hecker presented a paper entitled "Dynamic Honeypot Construction" at the 10th Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education (CISSE) in June 2006.

• Dr. Brian Hay presented a paper entitled "Evolution of the ASSERT Computer Security Lab" (slides) at the 10th Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education (CISSE) in June 2006

• Dr. K. Nance presented a invited talk entitled "Computer Forensics – Hiding in Plain Sight" at Montana State University in November 2005.

• Dr. M. Strohmaier presented a paper entitled "Phishing: What Teachers Need to Know for the Home and Classroom" at the 2006 SITE Conference in March.

• The Montana State University President’s Office sponsored Dr. K. Nance to present a talk entitled "Basic Computer Security for Higher Education" to administrators, Deans, and Department Heads at Montana State University in December 2005.

• Dr. K. Nance presented a paper entitled "Building a Community of Strong Passwords" at the 17th International Society for Information Technology and Teacher Education Conference in Orlando in March 2006.

• Dr. B. Hay presented a paper entitled "Communicating Computer Security Issues to K-12 Teachers and Students" at the 2006 SITE Conference.

TASK Presentations

The recently funded Teaching Alaskans...Sharing Knowledge (TASK) program places graduate students from science and technology disciplines in Alaska K-12 schools, with the goal of raising the level of science and technology education. One of the current TASK Fellows is a graduate student in Computer Science, and as part of his work he has given presentations on computer security topics to students, teachers, and Parent Teacher Associations.
